Taking a Step Back in Time in Athens, Greece

Greece, specifically Athens has been on my to go list for years so when the opportunity finally presented itself to me, you best believe I jumped on it and got to planning.  Traveling there turned out to be pretty convenient since we were visiting our family in Bulgaria, the next door neighbor to my Mythological destination.

Now onto the main reason why Greece had been on the top of my travel ventures…Athens and more specifically, The Acropolis. Before we go further, you must decide how well you handle heat…and I mean scorching, full on 100 degrees Fahrenheit summer blast. That will be your deciding factor on what month you should plan your Greek adventure. We, of course, wanted to get a sense of Hades’ wrath so we opted for the prime month of summer heat, August. This is not an exaggeration…it was HOT. Before you take on The Acropolis and the climb to the top of the ruins, ensure you are wearing light, loose fitted clothing, your stylish hat in hand and a big bottle of water to stay hydrated (because once we were done with ours the nearest stand OUTSIDE the Acropolis had ran out of water and was only selling fairly sweet 3 euro lemonade). Don’t wear heels, it is a fairly long walk plus combined with the heat,  it won’t be a great combination.

The Acropolis was everything I imagined and more. Yes, one side of it was covered in scaffolding so that took away from its majestic feel but once you pass that and get on the other side, you quickly forget about the restoration work going on and are just engulfed with centuries of history rushing through you.  It was incredible to  actually be standing at the site of the ancient Greek ruins that I had read about in so many history textbooks.Take your time to look at all the ruins, snap as many pictures as you wish and head over to the sides of the hill where you truly see all of Athens. Now, we were in Athens for 3 days, I really think you only need 2 days there unless you plan on venturing out to nearby spots like Olympus and the other temples. Maybe for some, the Acropolis won’t be as exciting as it was for me but regardless,  even if it’s just a checklist item,  the experience is definitely a must.
